English director and screenwriter, Studied theatre design and direction at Nottingham trent, began in theatre and cutting film trailers, and joined academy in 1993 after writing and directing three shorts, now a partner at Academy. Established himself in the 1990s with music videos for Radiohead (“Street Spirit”, “Karma Police”, MTV director of the year 1997), Jamiroquai (“Virtual Insanity”, ten MTV VMA nominations and four wins including Video of the Year), Massive Attack, unkle (“Rabbit in Your Headlights”), Nick Cave, Blur and Richard Ashcroft. His Guinness “surfer” (1998–99, Amv Bbdo, written by Walter Campbell and Tom Carty) won two D&AD black pencils and still tops polls as the greatest commercial ever made; also Guinness “Dreamer” and “Swimblack”, Stella Artois, Levi’s, Nike, Sony, Volkswagen, Channel 4, Wrangler, Apple, Kodak, Barclays and Alexander McQueen. Features: Sexy Beast (2000, Ben Kingsley’s Oscar nomination), birth (2004, Nicole Kidman, re-evaluated as a masterpiece), under the skin (2013) and the zone of interest (2023), Cannes Grand Prix and fipresci, two Academy Awards (Best International Feature and Best Sound), three BAFTAs including uniquely both Best British Film and Best Film Not in the English Language, and his own nominations for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Six BAFTAs in all, a bifa and a César. UKMVA Icon Award.
