Music documentarian, director and presenter with over twenty years in the field. Began as a radio host in new Zealand at the age of fourteen, moving from presenting music video shows to writing, directing and hosting his own long-form television, including Making Tracks, a series on global music culture picked up by the BBC and National Geographic Channel worldwide, in which he interviewed many of music history’s significant figures. That work led him to join the Red Bull Music Academy as a host and interviewer in 2004. Moved to Japan in 2014 to focus on documentary. That year he wrote and co-directed with Tu Neill the critically acclaimed Diggin’ in the carts, a six-episode series on the global impact of Japanese video game music, which went on to produce a radio series, a compilation on Hyperdub records and a global tour taking Japanese video game composers to clubs, venues and festival stages worldwide. A third season in 2018 widened the scope beyond Japan to the UK, US and Europe across eight episodes. Has since written and directed short-form documentary for Bbc Storyworks, vice, nowness, Channel News Asia and extensively for Red Bull. Directed Video Game Wars: Japan (2021). His six-part series a century in sound (2024) explores Japan’s Deep Listening Culture and the new wave of Jazz Kissa, Tokyo’s distinctive music cafés.
